Ask about the dishes you actually want
“Is everything halal?” can be difficult to answer when a menu and supply chain are complex. Instead, ask about the specific meat, sauce or dish you plan to order. Request the certifier or supplier if that information matters to your decision.
Staff may need to check. A restaurant that answers carefully is providing better information than one that offers an automatic yes.
Clarify preparation as well as ingredients
If cross-contact concerns you, ask how the kitchen separates ingredients, utensils, grills and fryers. Also check marinades, stocks and confectionery, which may contain ingredients that are not obvious from the dish name.
- Which supplier or certifier applies to this meat?
- Does the sauce contain alcohol or other ingredients I should know about?
- Is the fryer or grill shared with other products?
- Has the recipe or supplier changed recently?
Common questions
What if staff are unsure?
Ask whether they can check with a manager or supplier. If you cannot get the certainty you need, choose another dish or venue.
Should I rely on old reviews?
Reviews can provide context, but suppliers and menus change. Confirm important details with the restaurant directly.
